Join The Board: Trustee Treasurer
Create Define Release (CDR) a community-first music organisation working towards an equitable music industry for producers and artists. We create events and programmes that empower people to create music, define their sound, and release music on their terms.
We’re now seeking a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees — someone who can strengthen our financial foundations and help us thrive through a critical period of growth. The ideal candidate will have previous experience working at Board or Senior Management level.
This is an exciting time to join CDR, after recently becoming an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation we are rapidly growing our projects around the country. Building on 20 years of heritage in the UK underground music scene, there is a significant opportunity to push on further and grow CDR’s profile to establish ourselves as a leading music and education organisation nationally.
About the Role
CDR is entering a period of strategic development and organisational change as we shift from a Community Interest Company to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. As Treasurer, you will play a critical role in shaping our direction by:
- Helping to shape a long-term fundraising and business development strategy
- Providing financial oversight and ensuring robust governance and regulatory compliance
- Supporting the development of effective, scalable financial systems across our growing programme
- Advising the leadership team on budgeting, risk, and resource planning
- Translating financial information for the wider Board and acting as a strategic sounding board for our team
Time Commitment
The role is voluntary, with a commitment to attend four Board meetings per year. All meetings typically last two hours and usually take place via video call. We also hold one board 'away day' per year (personal travel expenses are reimbursed).
We are ideally looking for someone with the capacity to provide occasional support and advice between meetings. The role is primarily strategic but an ideal candidate would be willing and able to monitor the charity’s finances and work with our CFO to prepare organisational budgets and oversee preparation of the annual accounts. This time commitment would be no more than 1 day a month.
The initial term is 3 years, with the option to renew. The Charity Commissions CC3 - The Essential Trustee Guide sets out details of the legal responsibilities of charity trustees:
About You
You’ll bring:
- Significant experience in charity finance, ideally in a senior or strategic role.
- A strong grasp of financial governance, planning, and systems design.
- Understanding of fundraising strategy and business development within the nonprofit or cultural sector.
- The ability to support a small team with big ambitions — offering practical support as well as strategic advice.
- Passion for music, culture, and social equity, and alignment with our mission to support Black electronic music and inclusive creativity.
You do not need to be a qualified accountant, but experience with charity SORP, financial modelling or impact-led funding approaches would be an asset.
Why Join Us?
This is a chance to contribute your skills to a pioneering, mission-driven organisation, while gaining board-level experience and connecting with a multigenerational community of music producers, artists and educators.
You’ll play a part in shaping the future of an organisation at a critical moment of growth — supporting grassroots artists, nurturing talent, and building equity into the structures of music education and industry. Find our more about CDR on our website, and read about our history on Resident Advisor and FACT.
How to Apply
To apply, please send a short statement (no more than one page) outlining your interest and relevant experience to joe@createdefinerelease.com by 5PM September 15th, as well as a CV. If you’d like to discuss the role informally before applying, feel free to contact us on the same email.
We are particularly keen to hear from candidates from Black and global majority backgrounds.
If you have access needs or require adjustments to the application process, please let us know — we’ll be happy to accommodate.
About Create Define Release (CDR):
CDR is a black-led music and talent development organisation with a deep heritage in the UK's grassroots electronic music scene.
We are a community made up of generations of music producers, practitioners and fans.
Our purpose is to nurture independent music makers and progress black electronic music across many genres: from Hip-hop to Brokenbeat, Techno to Jazz, Garage to Grime and the many fusions in between.
We work with children and young people in schools and youth centres, as well as the older heads in clubs and venues. London-based with an increasing national & international footprint, we're operating in towns and cities around the country and the world, from Bristol to Nairobi.
CDR is led by Tony Nwachukwu, a renowned artist and educator known to many as the producer of Attica Blues. We are driven by a small team in London and sustained by a community of contributors and volunteers around the country and beyond, all people passionate about creating opportunities for people to connect and develop through music.

Keep up to date on all things CDR
Since we started back in 2001, CDR has been all about community, creating spaces for people to connect and develop through music.
Back in the Plastic People days, you could fit all of us in one small room around one soundsystem. Today, our projects and programmes extend from the dancefloor to schools, youth centres, as well as grassroots clubs and venues across the country and further afield. But in challenging times, with grassroots organisations like ours closing all around us, every bit of support counts.
Your help will enable us to continue delivering music programmes and events in the UK to the people who need it most. Our mission is simple: to build an equitable music ecosystem for producers and artists.
If you have any questions or want to support in other ways please contact us at support-us@createdefinerelease.com
