Preamble | Kwake Bass

Ahead of our session with drummer and producer Kwake Bass at Rye Wax next week, we caught up real quick with the hugely charismatic South Londoner.

How has your music production process evolved over time? Were you a musician or producer first?

YES. I started on drums aged 5. Then stopped at 14 to get into making beats then started again at 21 with the intention to compose from the drums essentially. That evolved into where I'm currently at as a 1man band.

What key changes have you seen in the music industry/bidness during your time making records? Is independent the only way to go?

BABYLON IS TRYING IT!!!! I HAVE ONLY SEEN ARTISTS BECOME MORE CONFUSED AS TO THE VALUE AND WORTH OF THEIR MEDIUM!! IN AN INDUSTRY SENSE WHICH THIS HAS LED TO A DEMISE OF PROFIT AMONGST THE CREATIVE COMMUNITY!!!

Talk us through the track you last [cmd] ‘S’d ? ([ctrl] ‘S’ to PC users)

This was an experiment with an algorithmic sequencer called a Zillion By a company called Future Retro and also a swynx by the same company. The experiment was my attempt at multi-timbral sequences being swung over many synths at 1nce to make a kind of strange arp effect, while also using the same note information to create random chords out of those notes for another synth to hold some kind of structure to the carnage ensuing!!!

....we got you...

What piece of studio equipment (or live) would you NOT part with – Ever!!

MPC LIVE!

Heavy Rotation

Could you name three things that have been on heavy rotation on your audio player of late?

Jon Bap
Egberto Gismonti
Griselda

What can the CDR audiences expect from your time with us?

RALLYING UP THE TROOPS !!!

Have you any advice for producers/musicians developing musical works in progress to play at CDR?

SELF SUFFICIeNCY AND SINCERITY REIGN SUPREME!
