In Conversation With Private Joy
Described as " delicious... tactile and ultra-dreamy" ,the charismatic vocalist, composer and producer is increasingly know for her chameleon-like yet distinct sound, ranging from sultry seduction, to hard-hitting dancefloor ballad.
Founder of the Lovescene neo-soul collective, and central to the growing alternative soul scene in the UK’s North; Private Joy aka Pops Roberts has soundtracked dancefloors across the globe via Gerd Janson’s International Feel, Local Action/2 B Real, and winner of Bill Brewster’s coveted "Furtive 50 Track of the Year" in 2022 with ‘dream-team’ collaborator Ruf Dug.
Drawing from street-soul, electronic, afrobeat, RnB and broken-beat as well as her semi-classical upbringing, the multi-instrumentalist and vocalist reveals her debut solo EP this summer on the legendary Rhythm Section International along with an incoming storm of dazzling genre-bending collaborations and releases.
As a producer, Private Joy is soon to drop her highly anticipated releases drawing from street-soul, electronic, afrobeat, RnB and broken-beat with live shows to follow, along with exciting future collaborations after a string of highly acclaimed releases with Ruf Dug, Mera Bhai, FINN, Redeye, Satl and Lenzman.
Join us for what will be an immersive conversation with Private Joy and bring your tunes for the opportunity to experience your music being played at Manchester's SOUP.
For those new to CDR Sessions, the event centres on an in-depth, production focussed interview with the guest artist, exploring their career and creative process. Keep up to date on all things CDR
Since we started back in 2001, CDR has been all about community, creating spaces for people to connect and develop through music.
Back in the Plastic People days, you could fit all of us in one small room around one soundsystem. Today, our projects and programmes extend from the dancefloor to schools, youth centres, as well as grassroots clubs and venues across the country and further afield. But in challenging times, with grassroots organisations like ours closing all around us, every bit of support counts.
Your help will enable us to continue delivering music programmes and events in the UK to the people who need it most. Our mission is simple: to build an equitable music ecosystem for producers and artists.
