How would you say your music production process has evolved over time? Were you a musician or producer first?

Neither, probably a DJ/fan first. Very little has changed. I still work in loops, still make music in a room at home. The only change is that I think about external things – releasing music, other people.

What key changes have you seen in the music industry/bidness during your time making records? Is independent the way to go?

Same answer to both, that there’s no rules.

Did you see a change in your creative process post-pandemic? A change in your approach, difference in where you find inspiration at all?

That period of lockdown, I made music pretty much every day. I wasn’t working, so I had time, a chunk of it, so I tried to make use of it before other commitments rolled back in. For inspiration I listened to a lot of reggae, rap and a lot of solo piano music. Post-lockdown, work resumed and that discipline slowly ebbed away.

You’ve always been eclectic with your output as a producer, yet you maintain a certain richness of colour and soul across them, what would you attribute this to?

Thanks. Probably comes from listening to music my entire life and being quite comfortable with sitting with something for an extended period of time.

Talk us through the track you last [cmd] ‘S’d ? ([ctrl] ‘S’ to PC users)

It’s an 8-bar loop in 5/4 time. It’s a downtempo/soul thing. I keep listening and trying to find the next set of chords that will move it along. Remind me and I’ll bring it with me to the talk.
