RALPH is a producer, DJ and director based in London whose track 'Doomscrolling' was played at the openCDR session at Bok Bok at Corsica Studios. Listen to 'Doomscrolling' here.

"I wrote 'Doomscrolling' in the spring of 2022 on Logic Pro X. Like a lot of my music, in the moment there isn’t so much a creative process, but rather a flow state of tweaking sounds until I get what I’m after. It almost feels like a combination lock with me meddling with the layers until something clicks. The track is primarily built out of sampling drums, this was definitely a formative moment for me, shredding drum samples to pieces in order to create the off-kilter percussion.

Taking a snare here, re-layering it, a kick elsewhere — it sometimes feels like a game of Tetris. I knew what I was after when writing the track, a bolshy, brooding bit of bass music, but I also recall wanting the energy of the rave to pounce out of it and vary in style — hence the vocal coming in. It takes you by surprise and sort of reaffirms the ‘rave’ genre, which is something my music often reflects.

At the time I was listening to producers like Cassius Select, Walton, Jason Code, klahrk and Atrice to name but a few. Their sonics definitely impacted this track, blurring the lines of sound design and music.

The rest was a process of rearranging and then titling the track. I think at the time I (like so many) were falling down rabbit holes of social media, this track (and title) is a bit of a finger at that, the evidence of what happens when you don’t give into screens and create something you enjoy. Call it your ‘anti-screen dub’. Then I added in my usual array of post-session textures: the squelches, glitches and sound design bits that I love. And that’s that really!"
