Track 3 / Feeling Closer

Debba

The post-lockdown years have seen UK producer Debba’s meteoric rise through the tiers of underground dance music. Debba continues his outstanding consistency of top-level production with releases via Cloudcore, Redstone Press and Circular Jaw to name a few; paired with memorable billings with Boiler Room, Boomtown, Madruga and a plethora of UK clubs. His self-release Only Just / Tell Me at the end 2023 expeditiously turned heads and perfectly teed up his reputable Kaizen EP titled Just Wanna which has seen support from the likes of Oneman, Jay Carder, My Nu Leng, Darwin & Plastician thus earning itself a raving RA Review.

Feeling Closer (formally titled 'Track 3') was played at Mia Koden's CDR Session at Corsica Studios.

"This one was inspired by the ever-changing sounds of the uk bass scene, with influences from garage, breaks and dnb (surprisingly) – I was listening to alot of 1985’s dnb stuff at the time which is where the idea for the gliding gritty bass lines comes from. It’s actually now been signed to an EP on Madam X’s Kaizen label - the track is now called ‘Feeling Closer’ and actually moved up the pecking order and is Track 2 on the EP but funnily a lot of my friends and the label still refer to it as Track 3 because it was called that for a very long time lol. The name ‘Feeling Closer’ came after a big stint of writer’s block and feeling as if I was falling further away from making music I love. This idea popped up out of seemingly nowhere and came together very quickly. Finishing this was a huge relief and got me back on track and closer to my love of music again, so the name seemed fitting. One thing I’ve come to learn over recent months is that being consistent is more important than making a good track every time you sit down to make music. If I go a week or two without making music, I become super rusty and the creative spark goes – consistently sitting down and producing every day (even if its crap) means that I’m in the zone when that random idea pops up. It’s muscle memory really.

This track was made completely ‘in the box’ in Ableton. I tend to work super quickly when I have an idea, so its always key for me to be able to get them down quickly too. My best ideas come to me when Im just sat in my dressing gown watching The Office so being able to get the idea down within a couple of mins is key. For all my bass, synths & pads, I use Ableton’s wavetable. It is honestly so good. I’m an avid believer in learning one synth inside-out rather than 10 and searching for that perfect preset. My entire Kaizen EP was made with just that, drums & vocals. For FX, I use alot of the Unfiltered Audio collection (shout out Kincaid for introducing me to these) - they have incredible FX units of all kinds - and Output Thermal (Thermal is nuts for distortion, defo check it out if you haven’t already). My vocal samples all come from Splice - I spend quite a lot of time digging for obscure vocals to chop up and process - it’s great."
